The Windows XP boot phase consists of four steps. Step 1. Initialization of the boot loader NTLDR program will switch the processor from real mode (RealMode) to 32-bit flat memory mode (32-bit FlatMemoryMode). In real mode, the first 640KB of memory is reserved for MS-DOS, and the remaining memory is used as extended memory, so Windows XP cannot use all physical memory. The 32-bit flat memory mode allows Windows XP to use all the memory installed on the computer (because of the design, the 32-bit Windows operating system can only use 2 GB, and the 64 bit can use 4 GB). Next, NTLDR starts the built-in mini file system drivers. Through this step, NTLDR can identify every partition formatted with NTFS or FAT file system, so as to discover and load Windows XP. Step 2. The step of selecting an operating system is not necessary on computers with a single operating system. If more than one operating system (i.e. multiple operating systems) is installed on the computer and boot.ini is set correctly, the computer will display an operating system option, which is the result of NTLDR reading boot.ini.
